General Practice in South Cumbria recognised the need to provide alternative services to its diverse population and to extend access to General Practice as described in the General Practice Forward View. This Service was developed to provide extended routine General Practice capacity for the population of South Cumbria and all 32 GP practices. This Service has been developed to provide extended routine general practice capacity for the population of South Cumbria with all 32 practices in South Cumbria to offer additional routine bookable general practice appointments each weekend and during Bank Holidays at Furness General Hospital (FGH), Barrow and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH), Kendal for the population of South Cumbria. Each appointment should, whenever possible, provide a complete episode of care.
The aim of the Service is to increase the patients’ access to routine bookable general practice appointments at weekends and on Bank Holidays in line with GP Forward View Plan. This will reduce demand on OOH and A&E (e.g. for repeat prescriptions and other routine activity where patients are accessing healthcare via an urgent care service). Because patients will be accessing healthcare appropriately, their experience will be improved with enhanced continuity and quality.
