In accordance with the General Practice Forward View (2016), General Practice in South Cumbria has recognised the need to provide a variety of services to its diverse population and to extend access to General Practice. The Cumbria Health Extended Access (CHEA) service was developed to provide extended routine General Practice capacity for the population of South Cumbria and all of its 32 GP practices. CHEA now provides extended access capacity for the population of South Cumbria and offers additional routine appointments on weekday evenings, Bank Holidays and at week-ends. Appointments are now available from four centres;
Ambleside Health Centre, Furness General Hospital, Grange Health Centre and Westmorland General Hospital
In addition to providing more convenient access to appointments for members of the public, the service will potentially reduce demand on OOH and A&E (e.g. for repeat prescriptions and other routine activity where patients are accessing healthcare via an urgent care service). Because patients will be accessing healthcare appropriately, their experience will be improved with enhanced continuity and quality.
